We’ve all been there.

You’ve written a blog post that you’re really proud of, and you want as many people as possible to read it.

You hover your mouse cursor over the big, blue “Publish” button, ready to share your blog post with the world.

You hesitate slightly, and a thought crosses your mind:

“Is it really the best time to publish this blog post?”

People could be busy working and not checking Twitter.

My biggest reading audience could be asleep.

And by the time they wake up, my blog post could be buried under a slew of newer, better-timed blog posts.

It’s a question that plagues all blogger’s minds.

Believe me, I grapple with this issue daily.

Therefore, I want to explore what factors affect the best time to publish a blog post.

Factors That Affect the Best Time to Publish a Blog Post

The fear of publishing a blog post at the wrong time is very real.

It has to be, right? Otherwise, we wouldn’t hesitate to get our content out into the world, regardless of time.

Maybe.

Before I explore that a little more, let’s think about where this question of the best time to publish a blog post time came from.

In my mind, several factors contribute to it:

  • Having the ability to publish to a global audience, existing in various time-zones
  • The sheer number of blog posts that exist on the web and the desire to stand out above the crowd
  • The desire to get the most exposure possible for your blog post

Before the web, written articles were published in newspapers and magazines.

Newspapers are, most often than not, read by an audience that exists within the same timezone as one another.

With the invention of the web, articles could now be read by a global audience.

As a result, we now have a diverse audience able to access our blog posts over many different time-zones.

This is both a blessing and a curse.

On the one hand, it’s fantastic that so many people can read blog posts as the potential audience has grown substantially.

On the other hand, we now have 24 different time-zones to factor into the question of when is the best time to publish a blog post.

Couple that with the sheer number of blog posts published daily.

Did you know that roughly 4.4 million blog posts are published every single day?

4.4 million.

Let that number sink in.

That’s a staggering amount.

And I don’t mean to flare up your anxiety about what time is the best time to publish a blog post anymore.

My point is that there are a lot of blog posts published every single day, even though there are 409 million people reading them.

Therefore, it’s easy for our blog posts to not be seen.

When Is the Best Time to Publish a Blog Post?

So, when is the best time to publish a blog post?

I want to break my answer into two separate answers for two very different audiences:

  • Human audiences
  • Search engines (Google / Bing / Yahoo)

Human Audiences

It’s common knowledge that word-of-mouth is one of the most effective marketing methods around.

If someone reads a blog post that evokes an emotion, good or bad, they may be more inclined to share that blog post with someone else.

As a result, the more eyeballs your blog post gets in front of, the greater the chance it has of being shared.

Therefore, it’s important to maximize that blog post’s market potential.

The first step to understanding your market potential is to identity your audience.

To illustrate, let’s take SitesMonster as an example.

I write about all sorts of website and blog related things on SitesMonster.

But the majority of posts are:

  • Web tutorials
  • SEO strategies
  • Thoughts about content marketing and creating a blog
  • Interviews

I know that the US and India are two countries with the largest general interest in the topics that I write about.

To be honest, the US is pretty much interested in many topics, due to its sheer size, culture, population, and demographics.

Therefore, if you’re writing in English and aren’t writing about a topic that’s tied to any specific country (such as Gardening in the Philippines), then it’s safe to bet that the US will be your biggest potential audience.

As a result, you will want to aim to post somewhere within a US time-zone.

Now, the US is spread across 6 time-zones:

  • Hawaii
  • Alaska
  • Pacific (UTC-8)
  • Mountain (UTC-7)
  • Central (UTC-6)
  • Eastern (UTC-5)

Out of these 6 time-zones, two good zones to focus on would be:

  • Pacific
  • Eastern

That’s because this is where both the West Coast (Pacific) and East Coast (Eastern) exist.

So now we’ve narrowed it down to 2 time-zones out of a possible 24.

The next thing you’ll want to do is more research into which of these time-zones (as they are very different), would be more interested in your blog’s niche.

And guess what?

Google can tell us. In detail.

Google Trends

Google Trends is a fantastic tool that allows you to search for a phrase and see what countries are interested in and searching for that phrase.

It’s incredibly powerful for finding your audience.

Take the example below.

I plugged the term “WordPress” into Google Trends, and it showed me that Pakistan and China are the countries most interested in that phrase.

So, plug your blog’s niche topic into Google Trends and find out what countries are searching for it!

You can narrow your search down to within the United States, and see which states are most interested in your search term.

That will give you a good indication of what time-zone you are better off publishing in.

Search Engines

I can only speak from personal experience here, as I do not work, nor have I ever worked, at Google, Bing, or Yahoo.

However, I believe search engines do not care what time you publish a blog post when indexing and ranking your blog posts.

The only thing search engines care about when ranking your blog posts is whether or not your post is:

  • Well written
  • Adds value
  • Contains keywords to rank

As a result, you could publish a new blog post at 3:34 am, and Google will still index it.

If Google likes the content, then you’ll get ranked, regardless of publishing time.

The only time-related factor Google takes into account when indexing your blog posts is whether or not you actually publish articles.

The more blog posts you write, the more content Google can index.

And Google likes content.

So spend more time writing more content.

And spend less time worrying about when the best time to publish a blog post is.
